This guest room has been a challenge ever since we moved in. We painted our kitchen, dining room, loving room, bathroom, and so we got to the guest room and just decided to work with the color it came with. A dark charcoal blue-gray. I took it as a design challenge since I have never had a dark feature wall. Dark feature walls are all of the rage right now, but they are hard to style around. I tried a couple different design looks with the furniture, but I just knew something was missing. So when I found Graham and Brown and their beautiful wallpaper I knew that was just the thing to really enhance our guest room.
Graham and Brown has so many beautiful wallpaper options, it took me awhile to finally decide on which pattern to go with because there were too many gorgeous options. I had so much fun planning and dreaming about what this guest room decor and refresh could be. I’m not going to beat around the bush, I was nervous about this diy. This was my first time every applying wallpaper.
I am so glad I pushed through my *silly* fear of tackling this wallpaper diy. I honestly procrastinated as long as I could before finally went for it! I am so glad I pushed through because I love it so much! This “Flourish Morning Wallpaper” really brightens our guest room, and completely changed the feel of this room. Which is exactly what I was looking for.
Alright, so here is the process I took. If you want to see videos of the process I have saved them to my Instagram story hightlights which I have linked here.
Step One- Get Your Supplies
To start with I ran to the store and picked up a wallpaper adhesive. I used the Roman PRO-543 universal wallpaper & boarder adhesive, a tool to push the wallpaper on, a paint roller, a tape measure, a leveler, and an exact-o knife.
Step Two- Prepare Your Wallpaper
Measure your wall to see how long you need to cut your wallpaper pieces. Some wallpapers need to be measured up to align with the pattern. I didn’t line this wallpaper pattern up exactly. I just measured the wall and laid out the wallpaper and cut it into strips. I added about 4-5 inches extra on the wallpaper just to make sure it would fit. You can always cut off the excess.
Step Three- Get Your Adhesive Ready
The next thing you are going to want to do is pour your wallpaper adhesive into a paint roller tray. Then get your paint roller ready to go!
Step Four- Go For It
It is time to go for it! Start by laying your first wallpaper strip close to the wall so you can easily grab it. Roll on the adhesive a LOT! This is the trick to wallpaper, at-least this is what I learned. Make sure you roll on a ton of the adhesive because the wallpaper will soak it up once you put it onto the wall. So roll on the adhesive, then line your wallpaper up to the top where the wall and the ceiling meet. Now grab your leveler and make sure your first strip is level. Do this by putting the leveler on the right side of the wallpaper and make sure the bubble is in middle. If you end up having to cut off wallpaper on the top, that’s okay. I had to on almost all of my strips, it makes a really beautiful straight line. Then use your tool to push the wallpaper onto the wall. To cut your wallpaper excess from the top or the bottom, take your straight edge that you used to push the wallpaper on and push it into where the ceiling (or base-board) meet the wall. Then take your exact-o and cut the wallpaper off by slowly cutting and moving the tool along the edge. I share how to do this step in my Instagram stories.
Now you are on a roll! Repeat the steps above and you will be done with your wallpaper diy before you know it. I highly recommend Graham & Brown’s wallpaper. It is such an amazing quality, and it was great to work with. The pattern choices they offer are so beautiful. I love this pattern I chose, and now want it in every room!
If you decide to wallpaper a space in your home I would absolutely love to see it. So make sure you tag me in your project so I can be impressed with you! I hope these steps help!!
