Everything you need to know about decorating with neutrals!
Two examples showing neutral decor
Here are two examples from our coffee bar area. This space is full of neutral home decor. This room has come a long way. We completely revamped this room. The floor was literally slanting and we leveled it out with a long process using 2×4’s. I decided to go with this beautiful black and white tile for the floor because it really adds a lot of texture to the space. The pattern is really eye catching and makes a statement for the space. Next, I found a perfect dresser to act as our coffee bar. I decided to paint it a pretty distressed look. Again, any texture you can add to a neutral space is just going to bring so much interest and be really eye catching. My husband built a beautiful and functional peg rail. You can read more about that on this blog, A Peg Rail For Small Space Storage. I added my copper collection on the peg rail. I always love mixing metals with neutral decor. For a little more interest I added this beautiful shelf and on the shelf I added some of my favorite vintage artwork pieces and these cute cement vases. When you are decorating a neutral space you want to add items you love and items that can really “tell a story”.
Why is having a neutral home decor all the rage right now?
I think so many people love having a neutral home because of the way it feels to them. Everyone has their own design styles for their home, and that’s what makes decorating so fun! I think that a lot of people like neutral home decor because it feels clean to them. By *clean* I mean clean lines! Whenever you decorate with neutrals your eye can easily cross the room without any interruptions. It is more of a simple look. Decorating with neutral decor also makes your favorite items come to life. They can really pop against a neutral space. Whether it is an artwork piece, a mirror, a candle, literally any decor piece. You can really layer and style the area to make your favorite item really stand out.
What is the secret to decorating with neutrals?
Now just because decorating with neutrals can look simple, that doesn’t mean it has to look simple. The secret to decorating with neutrals is layering. You can add so many different layers to a space if everything matches together. For example you could have a neutral chair, with a neutral pillow or two, with a neutral throw blanket, maybe a neutral rug underneath the chair, and then some neutral artwork. See what I mean about layering. You can decorate with however much you want to because to the eye it will still look simple.
Do I have to add texture to my neutral spaces?
I highly recommend adding as much texture to your neutral spaces as you can. Textures really make the space cozy. If you have a simple color palette with light neutrals, and then you choose to add a piece with high texture it is going to bring so much interest to your space. So, for example, lets say you have a basic neutral cozy corner you are creating then you can choose to add texture by maybe placing a textured basket next to the cozy chair. Or you can add texture through your pillow, throw blankets, or artwork. Another way to add texture if through picture frames or mirror frames. I have a whole blog showcasing some really great mirrors in this blog, The Best Mirrors On Amazon. Another beautiful way to add a layer to your neutral decor is through a rug or different type of flooring. I loved how our wood floor always added so many cozy layers in our home. If you don’t have wood floors or a fun tiled floor, then don’t be afraid to invest in a beautiful rug. Rugs can seriously change the way your room looks and feels!
Are black and white considered neutrals?
Absolutely! I’m sure you have heard people talk about how if you are designing a space you need to stick to three colors in a space. Well, when you decorate with neutrals that rule does not apply. When you have a pretty neutral slate of colors you are working with then it is a beautiful way to add contrast to a space by adding in either black or white or even both. For example, you have a tan chair, a tan pillow, a brown basket on the floor, and you want to add a throw pillow. Maybe you can add a black and white striped blanket to add some contrast to the space while still keeping it neutral. Another way to add a contrast of either black or white to a space is to paint your window trim, it can be a really nice contrast and add a lot of interest to the space.
