Who Knew You Could Find Antiques Online
Have you been looking for antiques to furnish your home with? I have been! Antique pieces are my absolute favorite and they can be tricky to find. One of my favorite things to do is search for antique finds online. Every now and then you find a real diamond in the dust. We all know there is a lot of “not wanted” or “not appealing” pieces of furniture to sift through before finding that diamond in the rough.
What Antiques Are We Looking For?
Before we can find what we are looking for we really need to know what we are actually searching for. Everyone’s answer for this question might be a little different. We all have a unique style we love for our homes. For the purpose of this blog I want to share how to look for antiques and in particular wood antiques. I am always in the market for wood antiques that have a lot of character to them. Here is a list of pieces I look for.
- Dressers
- Hutches
- Wall Decor
- Side Tables
- Benches
- Coffee Tables
- Tables
Where Can We Find Them?
Obviously we all know we can go to any antique store and find “yummy looking” antiques pieces. However, you will definitely pay for it. For one, antique deals know what they have. Secondly, they are trying to make money from their booth and need to sell the piece at a decent price to make it worth it for them. I personally love a good deal. The thrill of the hunt is so fun, but if I can find what I am looking for and it is set at the right price that is the jackpot! To find antiques I recommend that you go online, and specifically on the Facebook Marketplace. I am shocked at what you can find online. These pieces are usually well priced (or nagotiable) because for one, these people might not know what they have. For two, they usually just are done with the piece being in their homes and you are going to help them by picking up the piece and taking it off of their hands.
How Do You Find Antiques On Facebook?
Do you remember the days of Craigslist. Okay, it isn’t completely dead, but I haven’t used it for years. Facebook just makes it so easy for people to sell and buy furniture online. It is a ridiculously easy process. They even have a search option through the marketplace. You can literally type in what you are looking for. Let’s say you are looking for an antique dresser. You can search for it by looking up under, “antique dresser”, “wood dresser”, sometimes “dresser”, or maybe even “vintage dresser”. Try a search and if you don’t see what you are looking for you can always make your location radius wider. They give you the option to decide how many miles around you they will search for the product.
Once you search a product the Facebook Marketplace will realize you are looking for an antique dresser (or whatever you are looking for) and they will start to put these items on your Marketplace Home Page. Facebook wants you to find what you need to keep their app going smoothly. So, even if you search for the item and it isn’t available then you are sure to find it sooner or later because facebook will keep showing you similar items.
Purchasing The Item
Once you have found the item you are looking for you simply message the person selling the item and ask them if it is available. If it is available you can ask them all of your questions. Here are some questions I usually ask.
- Is the piece solid or does it shake when you push on it? (I call this the shake test)
- Does the piece smell?
- Does the items drawers all work smoothly?
- What are the dimensions?
- Sometimes I even ask them to send me different pictures.
Picking Up Your New Furniture
Once you have decided to buy the item I recommend asking the seller if you can claim the item by paying for half of it now. A lot of people are searching for the same item so if you want it make sure you let them know it! You can definitely ask them to go and look at the antique or furniture piece before you buy it. Just be in clear communication with the seller. Once you have nailed down all of the details you can schedule a time to go pick up your new piece!
