I still can’t believe that I am writing these words out. I feel so blessed that my husband and I have been able to purchase six homes in our nine years of marriage. We have moved a lot for my husbands calling of being a pastor. So, it has given us many options for buying homes. However, we have bought and sold homes in the same town just solely based on we thought it would be a good financial move. Thankfully, we have always made equity from our homes. This home is more extensive in what it needs to be restored back to it’s original glory. Our plan is to restore our little Country Cottage. We want to bring back the cottage feel it once had. I will be updating everyone here on the blog, and also on my Instagram @homechronicles which I will link here.
1880’s Cottage On Franklin
Our home was build in the 1880’s we aren’t for sure which year exactly. We do know that it is the second to oldest home in our town. It is a small country town, that has recently been growing a ton. The town right next to ours is rapidly growing, and was actually on the list of towns who have been growing the fastest. So, it is a great place to buy a home. I also love that we still have a small town feel, but can go three miles down the road and have every amenity we would want. Our home is about 900 sq ft and I was shocked at the size of the kitchen. The kitchen is actually fairly large for such a small home. It is a galley kitchen, but it is very open.
New Vent Hood
Right now I am planning on taking out the little cabinet above the stove and adding a vent hood right there. I believe it will be your basic stainless steel vent hood. I always love when I see people doing wood vent hoods so that might be an option, too. If the ceiling is all wood I think it would be pretty to have a wood vent hood to tie it in, but it would also look really sleek and clean to have a stainless steel one. So, I’m not sure. We also aren’t sure what fridge we want yet. I would love a new fridge that looks retro, but I’m not sure if it will be big enough. So, we might do a nice white or stainless steel fridge. We definitely have the room for a big fridge.
Cabinet Design Ideas
Our plan for the kitchen is to paint the cabinets a nice bright white. Everything is so small in our home so I am going to use white a lot to really brighten up each room. We will add bead board to the backsplash and to the surrounding walls. Another options for the backslash is a nice subtle marble tile, or a natural stone tile. On the walls we will add it to about two-thirds up the wall. The bead board will either be white or maybe grey. I am not sure yet if I want to paint the trim white or grey yet either. A lot of the design colors and textures are riding on what is under the drop ceiling.
Laundry Room Pantry
If we have enough room I would love to do two small sliding doors in the door way. It would be a small door on each side of the door way. I would love to find two antique small doors that would fit this space. I actually do have two small doors that might fit this area. I need to measure the right side to see if the door will fit there. This is the laundry room and pantry room so I definitely want a door for this space. I will share more about our plan here later. I love that this room has a window, it lets so much light into the kitchen and I can see out into the back yard.
Sitting Area
This space right here right beside the mud room is but enough for me to put a little sitting area in. I actually just found a small antique table on the Facebook Marketplace that I will put here with two or three chairs around it. The table will sit against the wall. I will probably find some white curtains to put here for the window. I love that this window lets in so much natural light and it look directly into the backyard. I am imagining Shane, Amelia, and I sitting here eating breakfast. Or Amelia and I sitting here working on homeschool.
The Plan For The Ceiling
Obviously, we will be taking down the drop ceiling. It HAS TO GO! Right now the ceiling isn’t very tall at all with the drop ceiling so we will definitely gave a foot, maybe more, when we take them out. We think there might be wood beams under the drop ceiling in here so I am super excited to get in here and start ripping these tiles off to see what is under there and see what condition the wood is in. If the wood is in good shape I would love to keep them a natural color. If it is in rough condition, I will probably paint them white.
Sink Area And Cabinet Plan
I am envisioning a nice antique white sink with a beautiful large faucet. For now, I think we are going to keep the countertops as they are. Eventually, we might change them out. We definitely will be painting the cabinets, and we will also be getting new pulls.
The Floors
We believe there is original hard wood flooring under the carpet here. So our plan is to take up the carpet, and the carpet padding. There is also a masonite board under the carpet that we will have to remove. Once we see the floors we will probably have to sand them down and refinish them.
That’s The Plan
Well, there you have it. Our plan is not set in stone and we might have to change things once we get in there and see what is under everything. I can’t wait to share the whole process with you. I will be sharing daily in my Instagram Stories so if you aren’t already. Please, make sure you are following along the journey over there, too.
