Layering rugs is a huge decor trend right now, I love it. I love how creative everyone is on Instagram. I find so much inspiration daily from scrolling everyone’s beautiful feeds. One of the trends I have noticed lately is, layered rugs. This is where you take one larger rug and lay it as your base rug, then take a smaller rug and layer it on top of the base rug.
Size Matters With Rugs
For this to look right I would recommend starting with the biggest rug you have, then layer a rug that is just one size smaller than the base rug. In my opinion this looks the best when you are styling layered rugs. However, there is no wrong way to style a rug!! I’ll say it again for those of you that just said, “I could never make that look right”. There is no wrong way to layer rugs, it will 99.9% of the time look really good and bring a lot of interest to a space!
Style
When you are looking for a new rug I would recommend nailing down what style of rug you want. So you want a farmhouse look, a modern look, a boho look, a vintage look, etc. What is your personal style?
Color Scheme
Once you have your style nailed down it is time to look at your color scheme. Each room should have a color scheme when you are styling it. I recommend choosing three colors at max per room, and then adding in neutral items where you need it. Knowing your color scheme is crucial for finding the perfect rug for your space. Every rug is different and will pull in more or less colors to your space. Knowing your color scheme will help you pair down your rug options. Ps. if you don’t have a color scheme yet, a rug can be the perfect base and focal point for your room. So you could get a rug you love and design the space to match it.
Textured Rugs
I love how rugs add so much texture to a room. By this I mean, they literally add texture and softness to your feet. They also add texture to the feel of the room. A lot of the time a rug will have a beautiful design that just draws you into looking at it, that is called texture. Another work for it could be interest. Some rugs do not have a lot of texture or interest and that is fine, that might be what your space needs.
Size
Oh umm . . . Adele, we already talked about size. Well, we did! I’m glad you are paying attention. But, I thought it would be important to mention finding the right size for your room. Yes, unfortunately yes, I have bought a rug that was too big for my space- like literally didn’t fit in the room. Sad day! So make sure you literally measure your room to see if it will fit. Sometimes in a smaller space a big rug can make the room feel bigger. Sometimes in a big room a small rug can define an area of the room. Two examples of how a rug can help your design process. Most rug companies do let you do returns so don’t worry about this too much.
Support your small shops
Of course you go to a lot of different stores that are around you and grab a rug, but I would like to suggest that you get your next rug from a small shop. If you are looking for a new rug I would highly recommend my new favorite rug shop LNC Home, linked here. I have several of their rugs are they have such an amazing style to them, and they have such a high quality to them. Here in my living room I just layered this beautiful rug from them, the Wrought Iron Trellis Rug. I will link here. I love how it adds such a modern vibe to our living room, and I am loving the new layered rug look! I can definitely see why so many people are loving the look.
