Hey guys, it’s me and Evie here. She is my little friend always following me around, I love it.
Oh my lands you guys! I finally gave my master bedroom a little attention. The other side of this room has been decorated which you can see here in this post. Also, I made a step by step tutorial on how to make your own DIY Topiary. However, this side has just been waiting for something to be done with it. I decided to do a little gallery wall over here. One of the most common questions I get asked to help with are gallery walls. They can be tricky and intimidating. I mean who really wants to poke a bunch of holes in the wall, but trust me it will be worth it. (You could always use command strips, but I have never tried that) I just use little nails.
So, where do you even start at to make a gallery wall?
Great question! I would say start by collecting items that you love. Items of all different shapes and sizes. Items that really show who you are as a home designer. Keep your color scheme in mind here. Collecting the items could take weeks, but it will be worth the wait when you have a beautifully curated wall.
Where do I find things for a gallery wall?
You guys are full of awesome questions today! It completely depends on what style you have for your home. If you have a modern home you might check Pier1, etc.
My personal style is a little bit farmhouse, a little cottage style, a little shabby chic, and so I like to mix my styles. But, I have to keep my color scheme the same. That’s how I find cohesiveness all through-out my home.
I go to antique shops, thrift stores, etsy shops, etc. Just keep searching around for items you love. Don’t forget that you can use anything in a gallery wall, it doesn’t have to just be pictures unless that is what you are going for. I use architectural pieces, hangers, cow tags, maps, baskets, etc.
How many colors should you have in your color scheme?
I would say stick to three colors. Having three colors throughout your gallery wall will make it a lot easier to place the items on your wall in a way that won’t feel too overpowering or cluttered.
But, some people love color and can make it work with more color. So just have fun and play around with different ideas.
How do you know how to lay it out on the wall?
Okay, so I start with my focal piece which is usually the largest piece I have, and I place it in either the right middle part of the space or the left middle part of the space. Sometimes I will place it in the middle, but usually I place it on the left or right middle position on the space I am working with. Then I just place the items around it usually in a random pattern. If you love all of the piece you are working with it usually doesn’t really matter how they are placed on the wall. I know some people use paper cut out into the particular shape to figure out the placement, I personally have never done that, but it would be a good idea for someone who wanted it to be perfectly placed out.
One more thing I want to add, just a little tip. I do try to weave my colors throughout the gallery wall. So if I have a light wood piece in the left-top of my space then I try to add a light wood item in the left-lower-middle area. This will help your eye be drawn all over your gallery wall.
I hope these tips help you create a gallery wall, and encourage you to not be afraid of gallery walls. They can be intimidating, but try to push past that and have some fun creating your new design to display all of your favorite items.
If you need some ideas of popular decor right now, that you can even get at the thrift store view this post, and this post.
