I love that thrill of the hunt and the joy of finding a new treasure. However, sometimes I feel like I am at a loss for what to look for while thrifting. Over the years of thrifting I have learned what is great to look for at a thrift store, and what might not be a good deal from the thrift store.
I have found some gems while thrifting. Honestly, probably 50% off my home has been thrifted. Chairs, ottomans, picture frames, baskets, candles, vases, and the list goes on. I thought it would be fun and hopefully helpful for you all to create a new series all about thrifting and what you could be found there.
In case you are curious where the other 50% off my home came from. It is full of goodies from small shops, antique shops, HomeGoods, Hobby Lobby, and a little from Target. But, honestly I would rather find some item from a thrift store that has good bones and flip it into something beautiful. Like my hutch thought I found for $34.99 and painted.
Here is a list of five items I am looking for at the thrift store right now.
Thrift Store Items To Search For
Side Tables
The thrift store is FULL of side tables. Some of them have a really great body and are still solid and have more life to give. Maybe it isn’t your color, but you could easily give it a new coat of paint. Look for a side table that doesn’t have any big scratches in it or chunks missing anywhere. Give it a good “shake test” and rock it back and forth to see how sturdy it is. If it wobbles then you know it might not be worth your money. The one in the above photo was an ugly green color, I just cleaned it up and spray painted. The ironing board in the below photo was a thrift store find, and I love using it as an unconventional side table.
I added this little bottle to this vignette in my daughters room for her Fall Bedroom Refresh.
I used these bottles to be the centerpiece to my Sunroom.
Vintage Bottles
You know that isle in the thrift store that is just full of random nick knacks, well that is where I usually find great bottles. My favorite type of bottles are old medicine bottles. I especially love them when they still have their label on them to add to the authenticity of them. I also look for blue bottles that have a great texture on them. You just never know what kind of bottle you could find.
Crocks
Right now I am on the hunt for some crocks. I want a medium sized crock to either put a Christmas tree. Or I could use it in my kitchen to hold my utensils. You can just do so many things with them. The one on my desk here was a recent thrift store find.
This white pitcher made for the perfect center piece for my Fall Tablescape.
White Pitchers
I have found so many white pitchers at the thrift store. Big pitchers, little pitchers. They also have pitchers with designs on them that can be really beautiful especially for seasonal decor. I love a good white pitcher that has a farmhouse feel to it. My favorite way to use them is to fill them with eucalyptus.
Old Books
I am a true sucker for a good antique book. When I look through the book section every now and then just to see what they have. Neutral covered antique books that have some good character on it are my favorite. Sometimes I will look for a book with plant pictures on it or music books with sheets of notes on it. There are so many crafts you can do with them.
