Now let’s talk about indoor plants. This is a topic that I did NOT like before because my plant babies would all end up in the garbage because they would die. But, I finally decided to give it another shot and to really learn how to take better care of them. Thankful I am happy to say so far so good!
Summer has presented itself so beautifully around here in Indiana. The flowers are all starting to bloom and the sun is shining.
Now let’s talk about indoor plants. This is a topic that I did NOT like before because my plant babies would all end up in the garbage because they would die. But, I finally decided to give it another shot and to really learn how to take better care of them. Thankful I am happy to say so far so good!
Over on Instagram I have shared some of my tips, but I’ve been getting more questions so I want to share what I’ve learned and tried. Hopefully we can make all of our thumbs turn a little more green.
Let’s jump in here on the new things I have been trying.
🌿 OVER WATERING I think the biggest reason my plants were dying before was from over watering. I always thought that if I water my plants every single day then they won’t die. EER false! This is not true, and let me tell you it does not work. Trust me I learned the hard way many times. You know you are over watering when the bottom leaves of the plant start to yellow.
SOLUTION – I have learned to water my plants based on the soil. Feel the soil, of it’s still wet then you don’t need to water. If the soil is dry then you probably need to water your plant until the soil is wet again.
🌿 POT STRUCTURE You guys this is sort of embarrassing but it’s true. I used to hate pots that had a whole in the bottom of it. I hated them because then I would have to water the plant more, and they kind of make a mess. Silly I know.
SOLUTION – I have now learned that the whole in the bottom of the pot is a necessity, it allows the excess water to run out so that you don’t good root rot. Ain’t nobody got time or money for root rot! If you do have a pot you love that doesn’t have a whole in the bottom of it just give the plant little bits of water at a time to make sure there isn’t just water sitting at the bottom of the pot. I have also started putting a paper towel at the bottom of these pots just to make sure it is soaking up the extra water. The Hobby Lobby pots are my favorite, but man I wish they had a whole at the bottom.
🌿OVER EXPOSURE Although plants do need sun to survive they can get too much sun. Some window sills will burn your plants up to a crisp. If your leafs start to get little black dots on them (especially succulents) that means they are actually getting too much sun.
SOLUTION – Keep an eye on the leaves of your plants, they tell you a lot. If you see that the plant is getting too much sun then simply move it to another spot in your home.
